RC-02/12 Solan/Bandh-1 Com. Dev/Env 10 Vols. 11.06.12 –24.06.12
Location:
Bandh is a small hilly village with 30 families situated at an altitude of 3000 feet above MSL. The houses in the area are scattered. The economy of the village is purely dependent on agriculture. Agriculture is practiced on small terraces and manually. The host organization RUCHI is also situated in the outskirt of Bandh village. The area faces many problems including lack of infrastructure and communication. Educational is imparted in the old fashioned way. There is scarcity of water in summer.
Work:
A check Dam and an earthen pond for water conservation were built three years ago on Shili Stream near Bandh village. The dam and pond recharge the natural spring which supplies drinking water to Bandh village as well as to RUCHI. During monsoon and winter rains these structures receive silt from upstream which reduces the storage affecting ground water recharge. Volunteers will clean the silt from this check dam and the earthen pond and rejuvenate the structures.
Volunteer s are required to work with village people on farm in order to experience intercultural learning, life style of Indian culture. Volunteers will clean the site, prepare beds and do plantation of fruit and fodder species to regenerate green cover in the complex and surrounding villages.
Additional activities will include like plant nursery development, seeding, ploughing, harvesting, cleaning weeds, cleaning farm and some physical work as per the needs. People grow Corn, Paddy, and all kinds of vegetables according to season.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will live in the RUCHI campus in shared accommodation. Basic and modest amenities will be available with library facilities. Asian squat type toilet and English WC will be available. Vegetarian food will be served. A cook will be there but volunteers are expected to help him and occasionally cook their own meals and self-management is required. Meantime volunteer can learn Indian cusine( cooking) Sleeping bags are necessary.
Leisure time:
Self organized city tours and excursions. Old Sikh and Hindu temples in the near vicinity can be visited. Nearby Kasauli town is another hill station as a tourist attraction. A visit to Shimla will offer an opportunity to see high Himalayan Mountains.

Location:
The workcamp will be divided between two places of Dharamshala and Bandh in Solan Dt. Dharamshala, is a small but internationally well known town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is 70 km north of Pathankot city and 15kms from Kangra town. Dharamshala offers a number of treks to tourists and a good majestic view of great Dhauladhar range of mountains. Dharamshala is a district head quarter for Kangra district and also happens to be the Secretariat of Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama. Dharamshala offers tourists culture of Tibet and a different experience. Like any other hilly area, the houses in the area are scattered. The economy of the Tibetans is on tourism whereas that of local villagers is purely dependent on agriculture. Bandh in Solan district is a small village which also houses RUCHI’s headquarters.
Work:
This camp will involve both exposure visit as well as physical work. The first week will see more physical action when they will visit various community development projects and work on them with the local people. Volunteers will work with various rural village communities and share their knowledge on various models of community development. The second week will be more or less touristic when the volunteers will be shifted to Dharamshala town, the home of Dalai Lama, where an exposure to local as well as Tibetan culture will be provided. Thus the camp will provide opportunities to get exposed to local and Tibetan culture and share each other’s culture and broaden horizons of volunteers on issues concerning environment and livelihood.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will live under simple conditions and share accommodation with other volunteers. Asian squat type toilet and English WC will be available. Vegetarian food will be served. A cook will be there but volunteers are expected to help him and occasionally cook their own meals and self-management is required. Sleeping bags are also necessary.

The volunteers will have opportunity to visit the seat of spiritual leader, the Dalia Lama and other historical Hindu temples. Opportunities will be there for short and long treks in the mountains. After the camp volunteers, if they like, may visit Golden Temple in Amritsar, Punjab.

Location:
Bogdhar is a small and sleepy village with 20 households and is situated close to Rajgarh town in Sirmour district of Himachal Pradesh. The village is 125 km north-west of Chandigarh city and 58 kms from Solan district headquarter. The entire area is hilly where the rural economy is based on agriculture and horticulture. Being high altitude (2000 meters above MSL) in the area, the weather is always pleasant and the landscape is beautiful. It hosts a 250 year old Hindu temple.
Work: Volunteers will work on Renovation work and painting picture on wall, teaching English in a Govt. school in nearby village. Children belong to farmers family and do not speak English that much. Volunteers will teach and play with the children. They will attempt to improve on their English pronunciation.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be allocated a house belonging to a local family, which will be shared with other volunteers. The living conditions will be simple and challenging. Location:
Tujhar is a small hilly village with 32 families situated at an altitude of 2200 feet above MSL. The economy of the village is purely dependent on agriculture. Agriculture is practiced on small terraces and manually. The village is situated near Patta, a small town in Solan district of Himachal Pradesh, a northern hill state of Indian union.
Work:
Volunteers will repair and renovate the village link road which gets damaged every year during the monsoon rains. In the absence of infrastructure villagers find it difficult to transport and market their agricultural products. Additional activities will include work on small farms and help with clearing the site, preparing soil, weeding and sowing vegetables.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will live in shared rooms with modest facilities in the village. They will sleep on floor and need their sleeping bags. Food will be vegetarian and prepared by volunteers with support from local people. Asian squat type toilet will be available.
Leisure time:
Self organized city tours and excursions. Old Sikh and Hindu temples in the near vicinity can be visited. Nearby Kasauli town is another hill station as a tourist attraction. In the process they will fill poly bags with soil, prepare nursery beds, sow seeds of vegetables and flower and prepare saplings through cutting. They shall also interact with villagers and educate them on health and environmental issues and concerns like global warming, climate changes, etc. July, August and September being the wet monsoon time, the volunteers do plantation on road side to increase green cover.

Ruchi campus, located near Bandh village. It is 30 km from Kalka and 60 km from Chandigarh. Bandh village is small located in interior mountainous area and the volunteers will have a unique opportunity to live with nature in a peaceful environment. RUCHI campus is one km. from the village.
Work:
Volunteers will work in Ruchi campus. Work would be Graffiti on wall. Subject would be related to peace and love, Global warming, good message through painting on wall for youth and public. Volunteer will get orientation before starting project. Additional activities will include learning of various developmental issues and solutions. They will visit various humanitarian projects and interact with the villagers.
Requirements: Interest in Art and learning ability, High motivation.

RC-18/12 Mysore KIDS/ENV. 10 Vols. 17.09.12 –30.09.12
Location:
Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka (South India). The city of Mysore is the cultural capital of the state of Karnataka. The city is known for its majestic, mystical, and mesmerizing beauty. The city is geographically located between 12* 18’26” north latitude and 76*38’59”. The weather of Mysore is very pleasant throughout year.
One of the main languages spoken in the city is Kannada along with other Dravidian languages like Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. A large population of the region is fluent in English and there are few Hindi speaking people.
Mysore is specially known for “Mysore art and Handicraft”, “Mysore Silk Sarees”, “Mysore Gold leaf painting”, “Folk art of Mysore”, “Mysore Pak (Name of sweet, very famous in Mysore)”.
Work:
Volunteer will have to work in Govt. school. Work would be renovation of school and paintings, and creative activities with children. Repairing of play ground, cleaning school surrounding etc. will be done. Play through learning activities will be encouraged.
Accommodation:
Volunteer will live in guest house or Hotel with shared room. Authentic south Indian breakfast and lunch and dinner will be served.

Ruchi campus, located near Bandh village. It is 30 km from Kalka and 60 km from Chandigarh. Bandh village is small located in interior mountainous area and the volunteers will have a unique opportunity to live with nature in a peaceful environment. RUCHI campus is one km. from the village.
Work:
Volunteers will work in Ruchi campus. Work would be Graffiti on wall. Subject would be related to peace and love, Global warming, good message through painting on wall for youth and public. Volunteer will get orientation before starting project. Additional activities will include learning of various developmental issues and solutions. They will visit various humanitarian projects and interact with the villagers.
Requirements: Interest in Art and learning ability, High motivation.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will live in the RUCHI campus. All basic amenities will be available with library facilities. Asian squat type toilet and English WC will be available. Vegetarian food will be served. Rajgarh is a small but growing town in Himachal Pradesh and is famous for producing Asia’s best peaches. The entire area is hilly where the rural economy is based on agriculture and horticulture. The area also has state’s highest lower caste population. The landscape is beautiful. The farmers have green houses established in most of the villages and grow fruit and flower cuttings as alternative to food crops.
Work:
Volunteers will work and learn nursery raising techniques. In the process they will fill poly bags with soil, prepare nursery beds, sow seeds of vegetables and flower and prepare saplings through cutting. They shall also interact with villagers and educate them on health and environmental issues and concerns like global warming, climate changes, etc. July, August and September being the wet monsoon time, the volunteers do plantation on road side to increase green cover.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be allocated a house belonging to a local family, which will be shared with other volunteers. The living conditions will be simple and challenging. Asian squat type toilet will be available. Vegetarian food will be served. A cook will be there but volunteers are expected to help him and occasionally cook their own meals and self-management is required. Sleeping bags are also necessary.

Location:
The workcamp will be divided between two places of Dharamshala and Bandh in Solan Dt. Dharamshala, is a small but internationally well known town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. It is 70 km north of Pathankot city and 15kms from Kangra town. Dharamshala offers a number of treks to tourists and a good majestic view of great Dhauladhar range of mountains. Dharamshala is a district head quarter for Kangra district and also happens to be the Secretariat of Tibetan spiritual leader, The Dalai Lama. Dharamshala offers tourists culture of Tibet and a different experience. Like any other hilly area, the houses in the area are scattered. The economy of the Tibetans is on tourism whereas that of local villagers is purely dependent on agriculture. Bandh in Solan district is a small village which also houses RUCHI’s headquarters.
Work:
This camp will involve both exposure visit as well as physical work. The first week will see more physical action when they will visit various community development projects and work on them with the local people. Volunteers will work with various rural village communities and share their knowledge on various models of community development. The second week will be more or less touristic when the volunteers will be shifted to Dharamshala town, the home of Dalai Lama, where an exposure to local as well as Tibetan culture will be provided. Thus the camp will provide opportunities to get exposed to local and Tibetan culture and share each other’s culture and broaden horizons of volunteers on issues concerning environment and livelihood.
Accommodation:
Volunteers will live under simple conditions and share accommodation with other volunteers. Asian squat type toilet and English WC will be available. Vegetarian food will be served. Mysore is the second largest city in the state of Karnataka (South India). The city of Mysore is the cultural capital of the state of Karnataka. The city is known for its majestic, mystical, and mesmerizing beauty. The city is geographically located between 12* 18’26” north latitude and 76*38’59”. The weather of Mysore is very pleasant throughout year.
One of the main languages spoken in the city is Kannada along with other Dravidian languages like Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu. A large population of the region is fluent in English and there are few Hindi speaking people.
Mysore is specially known for “Mysore art and Handicraft”, “Mysore Silk Sarees”, “Mysore Gold leaf painting”, “Folk art of Mysore”, “Mysore Pak (Name of sweet, very famous in Mysore)”.
Work:
Volunteer will have to work in Govt. school. Work would be renovation of school and paintings, and creative activities with children. Repairing of play ground, cleaning school surrounding etc. will be done. Play through learning activities will be encouraged.

Konkani is the only official language of Goa but Marathi is widely spoken and understood. Panaji is the capital of Goa and largest city is Vasco Da Gama. Total area is 3702 km. Population (2011) is 1,457,723 and literacy rate is 87%. It still exhibits the cultural influence of the Portuguese.
Work:
Volunteer will have to work in Govt. school. Work would be renovation of school and class room paintings. This includes teaching English and creative activities with children, decorate class rooms with pictures; teach them about craft, about your home country, Music.

This is a festival time in India and goes on for almost a month. Diwali (festival of lights) local festival of Budi Diwali, Bhaiya Dooj etc. all come during the period. They will also work with village people on farms, and related constructive work.
